Berberis congestiflora is a plant from the family of Barberry (Berberidaceae). She is from Chile . The description of the species was published in 1845 by Claude Gay in the Flora Chilena .

description

Berberis congestiflora grows as a shrub that reaches heights of up to 3 meters. The bark of young twigs is light gray and hairy, sometimes shiny, with increasing age it becomes bare, dull and sometimes frayed. The thorns are star-shaped to leaf-like, the five to 15 thorn branches between 2 and 5 millimeters long.

The leathery, elliptical, oval to round leaves are blue-green underneath, are 0.9 to 3.5 inches long and 0.6 to 2.5 inches wide. The leaves are entire or have up to seven thorny teeth on each side. The leaf stalk can be up to 1.5 inches long.

The doldige or racemose inflorescence is 2 to 5 centimeters long and consists of up to 25 flowers . The individual flowers, between 2.5 and 3 millimeters in size, contain 14 bracts and stand on 2 to 4 millimeter long stems.

The fruit is an approximately spherical, up to 6 millimeters large berry and four to five shiny seeds that are about 4 millimeters long.

Berberis congestiflora blooms in its homeland from October to December and produces fruit in January.

Occurrence

The plant species called michai in Chile is endemic in the Chilean Central Valley in the Región de la Araucanía and Región de los Lagos . It occurs there at altitudes below 500 m above sea level. The species seems to prefer locations near fences, its habitat is severely restricted by the conversion into agriculturally used areas.
