Bergeranthus is a genus of plants fromthe afternoon flower family (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus honors the German botanist, gardener and succulent researcher Alwin Berger .

description

The species of the genus Bergeranthus grow compact and form clumps with age. They form a fleshy taproot and thick horizontal rhizomes . Thick, vertical adventitious roots arise from the rhizomes. In the middle of the plants the rhizomes dry back, so that the plants grow in a ring with age. Their dark green leaves are triangular in cross section and have a sharp keel. The smooth epidermis forms small wrinkles during the rest period. The stomata are almost on the surface. Some types form cuticle folds , others have a dense layer of wax flakes.

The flowers appear on tall cymes that regularly tower above the leaves. They open in the late afternoon or in the evening. The peduncle and the flower stalks are two-edged to almost winged. The petals are golden yellow. Filamentous staminodes are absent. The golden yellow stamens form an upright column. The scars are thread-like. The nectarium consists of five separate glands.

The five-way capsule fruits are carried by long stems. They have rigid compartments and large closure bodies. They contain seeds 0.7 to 1.2 millimeters long and 0.53 to 0.82 millimeters wide , which are tinted differently in brown.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Bergeranthus is common in South Africa in the Eastern Cape Province with the exception of the western districts. The species often grow on slate-rich soil, usually in fairly high, dense vegetation, often along shallow hollows or in crevices in areas with rainfall of more than 300 millimeters annually, which falls all year round or during the summer.

The first description of the genre by Gustav Schwantes was published in 1926. The genus Bergeranthus includes the following species:

The subgenus Carruanthus , Hereroa and Rhombophyllum of the genus Bergeranthus described by Schwantes are recognized today as independent species.
