description

The species of the genus Hereroa grow compact to grass-like or shrubby and reach heights of up to 20 centimeters or rarely more. Their leaves are bright green to dark green, often greyish or purple green. They are almost round or squeezed, either sickle to scimitar-shaped or scimitar-shaped in the upper half. The hairy leaf surface is covered with dark spots.

The flowers appear in cymes or are rarely solitary. Their flower stalks are often longer than the leaves. There are five unequal sepals . The petals are golden yellow or rarely white. Filamentous staminodes are absent. The ovary is surrounded by five, mostly sickle-shaped nectaries . The flowers open in the afternoon or evening. The flowering time is mainly in summer.

The five-compartment, very rarely six-compartment capsule fruits are funnel-shaped at their short base. The closure bodies are small or missing. The narrow wing flaps have tapered tips and are usually narrow at their base. The fruits contain light brown seeds .

Systematics and distribution

The distribution area of the genus Hereroa extends from Lesotho , over an area between Keetmanshoop , Lüderitz and Warmbad in Namibia to the South African provinces of Eastern Cape , Free State , Gauteng , North Cape , Northwest and Western Cape . The species grow mainly in areas where the annual rainfall falls primarily in March and November.

The first description of the genus as Bergeranthus subg. Hereroa by Gustav Schwantes was published in 1926. Together with Kurt Dinter , he raised the sub-genus to the rank of a genus a year later. The type species is Hereroa puttkameriana . The genus Hereroa includes the following species:
