Berka is the name of a district in the municipality of Katlenburg-Lindau in southern Lower Saxony . The village belonged to the Eichsfeld until 1622 .

history

At the time of the Great Migration, Berka was a settlement site for Saxon tribes, especially Cheruscans . Excavations indicate that people settled in Berka early on.

Berka Church

Already around 890 to 900 a place called "Berga" was mentioned in the old property register of the Corvey monastery . This is probably today's Berka.

With the appearance of the Katlenburger Counts around 1000, Berka becomes the property of the Count of Katlenburg. Berka later became the property of the Katlenburg monastery.

In 1521 Berka came under the rule of the Archbishop of Mainz , and the neighboring town of Lindau was also ruled from Mainz. Berka remained under the rule of Mainz until 1692, even if it had actually been in the hands of the Dukes of Grubenhagen since 1622 .

In the following century, today's St. Martini Church was built from 1779 to 1784 . It is approx. 20 m long and 10 m wide. Half-timbered enclosures were erected on a stone substructure, and there is a wooden vault in the interior. In the west there is a church tower, which is massive in the lower part. Early records of Berka's church history can be found in the Salbuch from 1692 and in the church registers, the oldest of which dates from 1647.

In the following years Berka was a prosperous village, whose wealth can be explained mainly by the cultivation of tobacco, flax and grain. In 1923 an electrical substation was added.

Berka remained its own municipality until the regional reform in Lower Saxony . On March 1, 1974, it became part of the newly created community of Katlenburg-Lindau.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Berka
Blazon : "In silver a diagonal blue wavy bar , above a green birch leaf , below a golden griffin claw ."
Justification for the coat of arms: The place name "Berka" is interpreted as "Birch River". The Feldmark is rich in water (Rhume and Söse). The corridor of the desert of Sösede belongs to it; this was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Susa, who had extensive branches in the area and also owned property in Berka. They had a griffin claw in their coat of arms.
