Berlin-Arkenberge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arkenberge is a location in the north of the Berlin district of Blankenfelde in the Pankow district .

The settlement is located about three kilometers north of Blankenfelde in an otherwise unpopulated area. The village of Schildow is west of Arkenberge, across the Tegeler River . The name comes from the Arkenberg Mountains , which consisted of several hills north of the settlement. Originally up to 70 meters high, the mountains were largely used to mine building materials for the construction of motorways.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the gravel deposits in the mountains have been used for construction work in Berlin and the surrounding area. In addition to the leveling of the site, this also led to the formation of two gravel ponds, the larger of which is known as the Arkenberger Baggersee . A garbage dump was created on other areas, which is now used for building rubble and other waste.

The Arkenberge allotment garden was founded in 1932 . Housing arbors were then built on 72 parcels along the main street, which are still the accommodation for the residents of the Arkenberg Mountains to this day. There is also the allotment garden Arkenberger Grund with some allotment gardens about one kilometer northeast of the settlement .

The area has been connected to local public transport since the 1980s . In 1987 the first bus connection to the settlement was opened. Currently (as of 2014) there are around ten bus trips on line 107 to Arkenberge on weekdays and around half on weekends. About 2.5 kilometers to the north, the Mühlenbeck-Mönchmühle stop of the Berlin S-Bahn was opened in 1983 on the Berlin outer ring . In connection with planned housing estates, an Arkenberge stop was also under discussion, and the first construction work on the platforms began at the end of the 1980s. These residential areas and the train station were never built.

A rubble dump has been built east of the settlement since 1984. Its highest point today reaches a height of 122  m above sea level. NHN , which officially replaced the Teufelsberg as the highest point in Berlin in January 2015 . The area belongs to the Barnim Nature Park , as large areas have been preserved as wetlands in addition to the commercial operations .

The Arkenberge dog run area is located southwest of the road to Arkenberge. It extends 1.7 kilometers along the Blankenfelder Graben in 100 meters width on Blankenfelder Flur to the main street . The tour around the quarry ponds is also used by dog owners for a walk.
