Live and act

Bernard Schwartz was born in Manhattan in 1917 to Hungarian immigrants . As a child, he appeared on Broadway shows with his brother. During World War II he served as a medic in the Third United States Army under George S. Patton .

After the war, Schwartz worked in various jobs until he came into the film business in 1957 through Howard Hughes or his lawyer Greg Bautzer and moved to Hollywood. He became a production employee on the TV series Alcoa Presents: One Step Beyond starring John Newland , which ran on ABC from 1959 to 1961 and was about paranormal phenomena. He then worked as a production assistant for the film The Journey to the Center of the Earth . Further work as a producer and executive producer followed. In the 1970s, Schwartz produced blaxploitation films such as Hammer and Bucktown for United Artists and Universal Studios .

Schwartz's greatest success was the production of the award-winning Loretta Lynn biopic Nashville Lady (1980), which earned him an Oscar nomination .

This experience inspired Schwartz to make another biographical film about the country singer Patsy Cline , whose character also played a role in Nashville Lady . He did extensive research in Tennessee, where Cline had last lived and died. In 1985 the result finally appeared in the cinemas, the drama Sweet Dreams with Jessica Lange in the leading role.

Until a few months before his death, Bernard Schwartz worked with Richard D. Zanuck on the plans for a contemporary remake of The Journey to the Center of the Earth . In 2003 he died of a stroke at the age of 85. He left behind his wife and two sons.
