Bernhard Cella
Bernhard Cella (* 1969 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian multimedia artist and curator .
Career
Cella studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Erich Wonder , at the University for Artistic and Industrial Design Linz with Herbert Lachmayer and at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg .
Focus of work
Cella is an advocate of art books as a stand-alone visual medium, and he has curated exhibitions with and about books. He explained that a good art book can replace a visit to a museum because it offers many opportunities for discourse and experiments.
In projects such as Collecting Books, Salon für Kunstbuch or Kunstbuch * Kompass, he focuses on different aspects of the perception of books, often resorting to unconventional arrangements (such as the color of the book cover) to question viewing habits and classification schemes.
Another focus of his work is on production and distribution techniques of contemporary visual art, whereby as an artist he takes on the role of the businessman who breaks the boundaries between business and art. Among other things, he designed installations that also function as a fashion studio, hotel or museum shop.
He was a lecturer at the University of Arts and Industrial Design Linz and lecturer at institutions such as Print Room Rotterdam, Gallery of Contemporary Art , or Schloss Sigharting .
As part of his project "and. Learning English has no use", he used reproductions of his own work to break the language barrier to Chinese art students with whom he worked during a stay in Nanjing. He used aesthetic means to establish an alternative, non-linguistic form of communication. The Chinese students reproduced his work, which established a dialogue. In 2012 Cella was invited to the New York Art Book Fair by artist AA Bronson and Printed Matter Inc., where he presented Austrian artist books and publications at MoMA / PS1.
Since 2012, Cella has headed the Art Book Salon in the 21er Haus of the Austrian Gallery in the Belvedere . He is head of a project funded by the Austrian research fund FWF on the subject of publications without ISBN. He is also a member of the jury of the annual Austrian art book prize "Most Beautiful Books"
