Bernhard Dörries (painter)

Bernhard Dörries (born May 26, 1898 in Hanover , † July 15, 1978 in Bielefeld ) was a German painter and art writer .

Life

Bernhard Dörries was a son of the Protestant theologian Bernhard Dörries (1856-1934), his older brother was the church historian Hermann Dörries (1895-1977).

In 1917 Dörries studied architecture at the Technical University of Hanover , but through Kurt Schwitters he began painting and studied at the Berlin Art Academy . During study visits he got to know Italy, Spain and France. From 1924 he became a board member of the Kunstverein Hannover . In 1933 Dörries joined the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP). At the Paris World Exhibition of 1937 he won a "Grand Prix" for a girl's portrait. After Georg Schrimpf's death in 1938, he was given a professorship at the Berlin Art Academy, which he held until the end of World War II .

After the war, Dörries lived in Langenholtensen near Northeim until 1949 and then in Hanover. In 1955 he became professor again at the Berlin University of the Arts and retired in 1970. From 1973 he was a member of the German Association of Artists .

Dörries wrote about historical art for more than thirty years, especially for illustrated books.
