Bernhard Felmberg

Bernhard Felmberg (born July 20, 1965 in Berlin ) is a German Protestant theologian and from 2009 to 2013 was the prelate of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) at the Bundestag , the Federal Government and the European Union . Felmberg has been working at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) since 2014 , where he has been Head of the Central Department as Ministerial Director since March 2018 . Felmberg is the designated Protestant military bishop of the Bundeswehr .

After attending grammar school in Berlin-Wilmersdorf , Felmberg studied theology between 1984 and 1991 at the Church University of Berlin and at the University of Erlangen . From 1996 to 1998 he completed the vicariate in Berlin.

In 1997 Felmberg received his doctorate with a thesis on the theology of drainage by Cardinal Cajetan . The grade of his doctorate was “summa cum laude” (“excellent”).

As a research assistant and assistant, Felmberg worked from 1998 to 2000 at the Chair of Church History at the Humboldt University in Berlin , and then until 2002 as Federal Managing Director of the Evangelical Working Group (EAK) of the CDU / CSU .

In 2002 Felmberg was appointed senior consistorial councilor in the department of education, training and further education in the Berlin consistory of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia (EKBO).

On June 1, 2013, the EKD Council decided to put Felmberg on hold and to fill the office of authorized representative. Martin Dutzmann became his successor .

Bernhard Felmberg has headed subdivision 11 (civil society, churches and business in development cooperation ) in the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) since May 1, 2014 and was appointed ministerial director on May 1, 2015 . In March 2018, he was appointed head of the central department at the BMZ. Felmberg reports to State Secretary Martin Jäger.

The Evangelical Church Office for the Federal Armed Forces announced on March 26, 2020 that the Evangelical Church in Germany had appointed Felmberg as the new Protestant military bishop . He will succeed Sigurd Rink and will take over his office on October 1, 2020. Felmberg's appointment will initially be for six years.

Other functions

Felmberg has been the EKBO's sports officer since 1999 and was the initiator of the chapel that was newly created in 2006 in the Berlin Olympic Stadium .

From 2010 to 2014 Bernhard Felmberg was sports representative of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany.

In connection with his EKD / ​​function, Felmberg was also a member of the board of trustees of Aktion Deutschland Hilft e. V., the alliance of aid organizations.

Felmberg was also Protestant chairman of the Joint Conference on Church and Development (GKKE) and the Protestant Central Agency for Development Aid (EZE), and member of the supervisory board of the Protestant Development Service (EED). and member of the Presidium of the German Society for the United Nations .

From September 2015 to April 2018, Bernhard Felmberg was the moderator of the steering committee of the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles and a member of the alliance's management committee.

Volunteering

Pastor Felmberg regularly holds church services as pastor for "young and old" in the Grunewald Church in Berlin. Before Hertha BSC's home games, he holds devotions in the chapel of the Olympic Stadium .
