At Easter 1862 he went to the Kreuzschule in Dresden to acquire the general university entrance qualification. After graduation (1865) he went to the University of Leipzig , where he studied classical philology (especially with Georg Curtius ). On December 5, 1868, Gerth was awarded a PhD with a dissertation on the literary dialects of Greek tragedy. phil. PhD . On March 13, 1869, Gerth passed the teaching examination. As early as April 6, 1869, he became the fourth teacher at the Nikolaischule (leaving the probationary year)employed in Leipzig. Gerth taught there in particular Latin and Greek grammar in the lower classes, which also benefited his academic work: Gerth supported his academic teacher Georg Curtius in the processing of a Greek school grammar that appeared in 1873.

At the same time, Gerth was planning a research trip to the Mediterranean (Italy, Greece, Asia Minor), for which he received leave until Easter 1874. He was offered a call to the newly founded Royal High School in Dresden-Neustadt , to which he changed as a senior teacher at Easter 1874. In 1878 he received the title of professor. On October 1, 1889, he moved to the grammar school in Zwickau , where he was appointed rector two years later. On October 1, 1901, Gerth moved to the König-Albert-Gymnasium in Leipzig as rector , where he worked until the end of his life. Gerth continued his scientific studies throughout his career. His greatest work is the revision of the comprehensive grammar of the Greek language by Raphael Kühner , which he undertook together with Friedrich Blass . Pale worked on the theory of sounds and forms, Gerth on the theory of sentences in two parts. In this arrangement (3rd edition, Hanover 1898–1904) the work known as "Kühner-Gerth" is still used today. As a purely descriptive grammar, it represents a unique collection of material for the syntax of the Greek language. Gerth died in Leipzig in 1911 and was buried in the Trinity cemetery in Dresden.
