Bernhard Koelver

Bernhard Kölver (born April 2, 1938 in Cologne ; † November 27, 2001 in Leipzig ) was a German Indologist and most recently professor at the University of Leipzig .

Live and act

After attending school in Wertheim , Gummersbach and Fort Myers (Florida), Bernhard Kölver studied linguistics , English , German and Indology at the universities of Kiel , Glasgow , Göttingen and Frankfurt am Main from 1956 . Doctorate in 1965 at the University of Frankfurt / M . After working as a research assistant at the university there and a one-year library traineeship at the Bavarian State Library in Munich, Kölver became a research assistant at the Institute for Indology at the University of Cologne in 1967 and completed his habilitation there in 1969. From 1970 to 1972, Kölver stayed and worked in Kathmandu there on behalf of the Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft and financed by the German Research Foundation as part of the “Nepal German Manuscript Preservation Project (NGMPP)” to secure and microfilm Nepalese manuscripts and other important sources. Since then he has devoted himself very intensively to Nepal research , especially the cultural and religious history of the Kathmandu Valley.

From 1972 to 1976 Kölver then worked as a lecturer or adjunct professor for Indology at the University of Cologne . In 1976 he was appointed to the Chair of Indology at the University of Kiel . From 1987 to 1988 he was visiting professor at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu; for the years 1991–1992 he received a research grant at the Historisches Kolleg in Munich. In 1993 he was appointed to the professorship for Indology at the University of Leipzig , which he held until his early retirement in 2001.

In 1995 Kölver became a member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences . King Birendra of Nepal awarded him the "Triśaktipaṭṭa-bhūṣaṇa".
