Bernhard Christian Friedrich Martin (born August 1, 1889 in Rhoden , Waldeck district , † March 4, 1983 in Marburg ) was a German folklorist and dialect researcher .

Life

After graduating from high school, Martin studied folklore and dealt in numerous papers with research on German dialect in particular. For a time he was an honorary professor for dialect research at the Philipps University of Marburg and between 1927 and 1956 he was co-editor of the German Language Atlas , a language atlas on dialects in Germany. His book The German Dialects (1939) was one of the first comprehensive manuals and comprehensive descriptions of German dialects.

During the period of National Socialism , Bernhard Martin, who had become a member of the NSDAP in 1937, headed the research center for German vernacular as part of the establishment of the NSDAP's so-called High School .
