Bernhard Roos (politician, 1796)
Bernhard Roos (born Beres Wolff ; * October 24, 1796 in Ingenheim ; † November 1, 1888 ibid) was a German merchant , landowner , head of the Jewish community , elector , politician and from 1869 to 1884 mayor of Ingenheim.
Life
In 1815 he married Sara Mayer (1800–1867), who was born in Niederhochstadt and died in Ingenheim .
As the first board member of the largest Jewish religious community in the Palatinate , which he remained until his death, he and other members signed the purchase contract for the future synagogue property on September 27, 1827 .
Since at least 1833 Roos was also politically active as a city councilor.
In 1844, Roos received the bishop of Speyer Nikolaus von Weis , who attended the celebrations dedicated to him in the synagogue and spoke to those present, with a large participation of the population .
His popularity and reputation can also be seen in the fact that in 1855, as a Jew in a predominantly Christian environment, he was elected voter for the elections to the Bavarian state parliament with 240 of 246 votes .
In 1869, at the age of 73, Roos was elected “the first and only Jewish mayor of the Palatinate”.
