prehistory

When the Swedish singer Zarah Leander was brought to Vienna by Max Hansen in 1936 to take on the leading female role in the operetta Axel an der Himmelstür , the red-haired contral-alto has been the undisputed queen of revue stages and record sales in Sweden for six years already two children and a second husband, the son of Stockholm Opera Director Forsell.

When she shoots the film Premiere during the daytime of the Viennese performance series , the recordings end up in the hands of the large production companies and trigger a bidding war. After all, the school-age children in Sweden are the reason to opt out of Hollywood and in favor of the nearby UFA .

For a princely fee, Zarah Leander lets UFA use ten films as a wicked lady with a heart over the next six years. The films are box office hits on the European continent.

Between filming and advertising tours, she always travels back to her home country Sweden, where she bought the Lönö estate south of Stockholm on an island in the archipelago.

When the war took on a threatening dimension with the Russian campaign in 1942 , she decided to end her contract with the UFA as soon as possible and to go back to work in Sweden.

After filming Damals in autumn 1942, she turned down all the scripts offered under pretexts and moved a large part of her furniture to Sweden. When her new Berlin villa was hit by Allied bombers at the beginning of 1943, in the days of the premiere of Back then , she finally returned to Lönö and postponed all negotiations about new films until the UFA's last contractual option in the summer of 1943 was no Result has expired. Now she would be contractually free.

But now the Swedish organizers and journalists are turning against "the Nazi siren " and preventing any involvement. Zarah Leander has no choice but to retire to her manor for four years after the end of the war and take care of agriculture, fishing and the large numbers of refugees who arrive.

action

On her fortieth birthday on March 15, 1947, Zarah Leander sits alone in the living room of her country estate and, after no congratulatory letters but only invoices have arrived, she expects visitors or at least callers for whom she has prepared a small list over the phone. But when nothing happens, she looks back on her life and pours herself forty glasses of schnapps, one for every year.

She remembers the meetings with Joseph Goebbels , Hitler , Detlef Sierck , Carl Froelich and Heinrich George , who appears to her as a ghost, and in the course of the piece finds the opportunity to sing more than a dozen of her songs, partially or completely. At the end there is a redeeming phone call that paves the way for her post-war career.

A small epilogue shows Leander at a later point in her career, where she justifies herself to the press why she appears again and again after farewell tours, even on coffee trips .

The piece has a text portion of about 3/4 of the approximate playing time of about 90 minutes.
