Bernhard Schleissheimer

Bernhard Schleissheimer (born August 14, 1922 in Unterfinning ; † May 5, 2020 ) was a German philosopher and educator . He was a professor of philosophy at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt .

Life

Schleißheimer was the son of the teacher Jakob Schleißheimer and Hedwig, née. Koeßler, and grew up in Unterfinning near Landsberg am Lech . At the age of eighteen he became a soldier on the Russian Eastern Front in 1940 and was taken prisoner by the Soviets in 1943. After returning from captivity in 1948, he completed a course for late returnees at the teacher training institute and worked as a teacher in Fischbach (1950–1952) and Munich (1954–1962). From 1954 to 1959 he studied in addition to his teaching job philosophy , pedagogy , history and Byzantine Studies at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich , where he 1958 Dr. phil. received a doctorate; he completed his habilitation with a thesis on "Knowledge and Belief".

From 1962 until his retirement in 1987 he taught at the University of Eichstätt and was professor of philosophy there from 1970. From 1970 to 1972 he was rector of the "Pedagogical University of Eichstätt" and from 1977 to 1979 he was vice-president of the "Gesamtthochschule Eichstätt".

Bernhard Schleißheimer was married to Annemarie, born in 1948. Biberger; the marriage has five children.

Act

The main teaching and research areas included anthropology and cultural philosophy , basic philosophical questions in pedagogy and ethics. With his “Ethik heute” published in 2003, Schleißheimer presented his own ethics , dealing with the Greek-Occidental tradition of ethical thought and contemporary philosophers such as Alasdair MacIntyre and Martha Nussbaum .

As the last rector of the “Eichstätt University of Education” (1970–1972) and Vice President of the “Eichstätt Comprehensive University” (1977–1979), he played a key role in the merger with the Philosophical-Theological University in the establishment of the Catholic University of Eichstätt in 1972. From 1973 to 1975, as a member of a structural advisory board, he was significantly involved in establishing the basis for the establishment of the comprehensive university as the first Catholic university in the German-speaking area.

For his services to science and the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt , he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1986 , received the papal New Year's Eve Order in 2002 and was made an Honorary Senator by the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt in 2012 .
