Bernhard Wessel first learned from his father before continuing his education in sculpture with Johann Christian Ruhl in Kassel from 1815 to 1817. From 1818 to 1820 Wessel stayed in Paris to study, and from 1822 to 1825 in Rome . He “returned to Hanover in 1825” and was appointed court sculptor there. As a result, however, he had to " give preference to the orders of the royal court over private individuals."

In 1831 Wessel received the call to the Hanover Higher Trade School as a teacher for modeling and embossing .
