Bernhard August Wilhelm von Kleist (born July 20, 1843 in Drenow , Belgard district ; † March 5, 1929 there ), was a Prussian farmer and politician .

Family background

Bernhard von Kleist came from the Damen branch of the Muttrin-Damen line of the Kleist family , and thus from Pomeranian nobility, and was the second eldest son of Hermann Karl August Otto von Kleist (1800-1884), landlord of Drenow, and Agnes von Gersdorf (1812 -1884).

Life

Bernhard von Kleist attended grammar schools in Neustettin and Kolberg before he decided on a military career. After taking the ensign's exam in Berlin in August 1861, he joined the 7th Pomeranian Infantry Regiment No. 54 and was appointed second lieutenant in July 1863 . His unit was relocated to Swinoujscie in July 1863 to be equipped there for the upcoming war against Denmark . He was unable to take part in this campaign because of a serious illness caused by typhus : the consequences of the illness led to invalidity and, on February 1, 1866, he retired from active service.

He now turned to agriculture. First he acquired his father's estate Drenow by buying it from his father Hermann von Kleist. He then immediately began to ameliorate the land. Over the years, only interrupted by a brief reactivation in active military service in 1870/71, in which he commanded a prisoner company in Stettin , he gained another 600 acres of arable land and 60 acres of meadows to his previously cultivated lands through amelioration . He also built a starch factory on his estate .

In addition to cultivating his estate, as a member of the Prussian Conservative Party , he dealt with political issues. He was elected to the Prussian House of Representatives as a member of the Conservatives for the constituency of Köslin 5 (Neustettin, Belgard ) for the 20th term (1903 to 1908) .

Bernhard von Kleist was a Knight of Honor of the Order of St. John . He was married to Agnes Henze (1845–1916) since October 23, 1866. This marriage produced three surviving children, two sons and a daughter.
