Bernard Joseph "Bernie" Scherer (born January 28, 1913 in Spencer , Nebraska , USA , † March 17, 2004 in Sun City , Arizona ) was an American American football player . He played as an end in both the offense and the defensive line in the National Football League (NFL) with the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Pirates .

Player career

Bernie Scherer studied from 1933 to 1935 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln . He ran for their football team , the Nebraska Cornhuskers as an end. In 1933 and 1935 he was able to win the Big Six Conference with his team . Scherer has received three awards from his college for his athletic achievements . In 1936 he was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the third round to 25th place drafted . The team was looked after by Curly Lambeau and had numerous later members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame such as Arnie Herber or Don Hutson in their ranks. Scherer won ten out of twelve games with the Packers in his rookie season . The team moved with this performance in the NFL championship game , where you met the Boston Redskins trained by Ray Flaherty . The team from Green Bay won the game 21: 6. In 1938, Scherer's team was able to move into the final again after eight wins from eleven games. This time, however, the team left the field as a loser. The New York Giants trained by Steve Owen had prevailed with 23:17. In 1939 Scherer moved to the Pittsburgh Pirates, where his former teammate with the Packers John McNally was under contract as a coach, but was replaced by Walt Kiesling during the season . The game year was not successful for Scherer. He ended his playing career after this game round.

After the career

Bernie Scherer joined the US Army . He served in World War II , the Korean War , and the Vietnam War and was retired as a colonel . Bernard Scherer is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix .
