Bernt Federau (* 1930 in Danzig ; † 2017 in Hamburg ) was a German artist and master photographer . He gained notoriety primarily through his travel and aerial photographs, published in numerous illustrated books. His extensive oeuvre comprises over 200,000 pictures and is represented in numerous exhibitions and museums, including the Museum am Rothenbaum and the Museum of Art and Industry in Hamburg.

Life

Bernt Federau was born in 1930 in the Free City of Danzig as the second child of the poet and writer Wolfgang Federau and his wife Elisabeth Anger. His school days were disrupted by war missions. In 1945 he fled with his family to Denmark , where he spent three and a half years in captivity . After the end of the war he was released to Lübeck and began his photography apprenticeship there in 1948 after finishing school at the Katharineum . In 1953 he moved to South West Africa (now Namibia ) and was employed in Windhoek as a photographer and cameraman . After his return in 1958, he made several lecture tours in the Federal Republic and West Berlin and in the same year passed his master's examination. From 1959 he worked for the photo industry (Leonar Werken Hamburg; Agfa-Gevaert) and in 1966 switched to the press at Gruner and Jahr . From 1970 until his death he worked as a freelance photographer in his adopted home of Hamburg .

He specialized in travel reports, aerial and helicopter recordings from which more than 24 books were created. But he also occasionally occupied himself with advertising and architectural photography, among others in collaboration with the architects Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg . His great preference was always black and white photography, street photography and still life . In addition to his numerous photographs and books, he also left behind several paintings, wooden sculptures, texts and poems.
