Beryllium sulfide is an inorganic chemical compound of beryllium from the group of sulfides .

Extraction and presentation

Beryllium sulfide can be obtained by synthesizing the elements at 1150 ° C, by reacting beryllium chloride with hydrogen sulfide (which does not result in completely chloride-free beryllium sulfide), by reducing beryllium sulfate or by reacting beryllium oxide with carbon disulfide .

properties

Beryllium sulfide is a gray to white powder that has a faint odor of hydrogen sulfide in the air. It crystallizes in the zinc blende type (a = 485 pm). It hydrolyzes slowly in water and is rapidly broken down by acids and carbon dioxide . The compound is an indirect semiconductor with a direct band gap of 7.4 eV and an indirect band gap of 4.7 eV.
