Besim Üstünel

Besim Üstünel (* 1927 in Gaziantep ; † June 2, 2015 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish economist and politician. He was a senator and finance minister of Turkey.

Life

Besim Üstünel was born in 1927 as the son of Emin Üstünel and his wife Zekiye in Gaziantep in south-eastern Turkey. He had four sisters and four brothers.

After attending primary and secondary school in his hometown, Üstünel studied economics at Istanbul Üniversitesi and graduated in 1946. After completing his doctorate at the university, he completed postgraduate studies at the London School of Economics .

Besim Üstünel then taught at the Faculty of Political Science at Ankara Üniversitesi . During this time he was visiting professor at Stockholm University and the University of Minnesota . Üstünel also worked for the State Planning Office of Turkey.

In 1965 he became Deputy Secretary General of Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP) at the request of İsmet İnönü . However, he did not become a Member of Parliament. When elected to the Turkish Senate in 1975 , he became a senator for the CHP and remained in office until the 1980 military coup . Between June 21 and July 21, 1977 he was Minister of Finance in the transitional government of Bülent Ecevit . The attempt to form a minority government failed due to a vote of no confidence and Suleyman Demirel became the new prime minister with a coalition government of Adalet Partisi , Millî Selamet Partisi and Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi .

After the military coup in 1980, Üstünel resumed his academic career and taught first at İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi , then at Marmara University and finally at Galatasaray Üniversitesi . In 1986 he lectured at the Seijō University in Tokyo as a visiting professor. He was also the spokesman for the Turkish delegation to the Council of Europe in 1980/81 .

Üstünel died on June 2, 2015 in Istanbul's Florence Nightingale Hospital. After a religious ceremony in the Teşvikiye Mosque , he was buried in the Ulus cemetery on June 4, 2015.

He was married to Gülen Üstünel (née Cin).
