Betty Lockwood, Baroness Lockwood (* 22. January 1924 in Dewsbury , West Yorkshire , † 29. April 2019 ) was a British politician of the Labor Party and Life Peeress .

life and career

Lockwood was born on January 22, 1924, the daughter of the miner and miner Arthur Lockwood in Dewsbury , West Yorkshire . She attended Eastborough Girls School and left at the age of 14. She then continued her studies at an evening school. With the support of a Mary MacArthur Scholarship for Working Women, she studied economics and political science at Ruskin College , Oxford .

At the age of 18, her foot was amputated; the parents left the decision to her. This became necessary afterwards due to an earlier accident and insufficient care. As a child, several toes had already been removed due to the sepsis that had occurred in this connection . However, she did not consider herself disabled and was not registered as such.

After attending university, she worked from 1952 to 1967 for the Labor Party as a Regional Women's Organizer in Yorkshire. She then moved to London , where she was Chief Woman Officer and Assistant National Agent of the Labor Party from 1967 to 1975 .

She campaigned for equal opportunities for women at national and international level and supported numerous organizations in Yorkshire . She was committed to equal pay for men and women and was instrumental in introducing the Equal Pay Act 1970 . From 1975 to 1983 she was the first chair of the Equal Opportunities Commission and from 1982 to 1983 she was chair of the European Advisory Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men .

From 1992 to 1994 she was a member of the Council of Europe and the WEU .

Other offices

From 1983 to 1992 she was a member of the Council of the Advertising Standards Authority . At Birkbeck College of London University , she was 1983-1989 President. From 1985 to 1991 she was a member of the Council of the University of Leeds . From 1987 to 1994 she was President of Hillcroft College . She was a member of the Leeds Development Corporation from 1988 to 1995.

In 1983 she became a member of the Council of the University of Bradford . From 1988 to 1997 she was there Pro-Chancellor ( Pro-Chancellor ) and from 1992 to 1997 Chairman of Council . From 1997 she was Chancellor of the university; In 2005 she was followed by the Pakistani former cricketer and politician Imran Khan .

Later (September 2011), she was president of the National Coal Mining Museum for England (since 2007), where she previously 1995-2007 Chairman ( Chairman was). In the 1990s she spoke again on numerous topics related to education; she spoke on migration issues and disabled people's rights. In June 1999 she campaigned for the care of women who were exposed to sexual violence in the Kosovo war . In the years after 2000, she said, among other things, the right of asylum to anti-terror laws , abortion , teenage pregnancy and AIDS .

In the period from 2001 onwards it initially had high attendance figures, which then fell significantly. She last spoke up on March 6, 2008. She last participated in a vote on March 31, 2008.

Honors

In 1987 she became Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire .

Lockwood has received four honorary doctorates . The University of Bradford honored her with an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters ( Hon Dlitt ). In 1985 she was awarded a Doctor of Laws ( Hon LLD ) by the University of Strathclyde . She has had an honorary doctorate ( Hon Duniv ) from Leeds Metropolitan University since 1999 and an honorary doctorate from the University of Edinburgh since 2004 .

Lockwood was an Honorary Fellow of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), where they 1992-1995 Vice-President ( Vice-President ) was, and Birkbeck College .

In 2000 she was honored with the AoC Gold Award from Dewsbury College .

In her honor, the Baroness Lockwood Award for Distinguished Teaching (BLADT) was established, which is awarded for special achievements in education.

Private

She married Lieutenant Colonel Cedric Hall in 1978 . He died in 1988. Her hobbies were opera and recreation in the North Yorkshire Dales countryside .
