Bettye Lavette (* 29. January 1946 in Muskegon , Michigan as Betty Haskin ) is an American soul singer.

Professional development

LaVette grew up in Detroit , where she was discovered by record producer Johnnie Mae Matthews. At the age of 16, she recorded Matthews My Man - He's A Lovin 'Man in 1962 , which became a US hit. She was toured with Clyde McPhatter , Ben E. King , Barbara Lynn and Otis Redding , then with James Brown .

After more singles , LaVette recorded her first album Child of the Seventies in 1972 , which, however, was not released. Despite great stage success, she was denied record success. She performed on Broadway for several years and went on a musical tour with Cab Calloway .

Bettye LaVette's career experienced an unexpected revival in 2000 when French soul collector Gilles Petard released the original Child of the Seventies recordings under the title Souvenirs . LaVette got a new record deal and successful new albums came out.

Awards

  • In 2004 LaVette received a Handy Award in the Comeback Blues Album of the Year category for A Woman Like Me .
  • In 2006 she received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation .
  • For her album Thankful N'Thoughtful (Anti- / PIAS) she received the Prix ​​Soul 2012 from the French Académie du Jazz .

LaVette performed at the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace charity concert "Change Begins Within" on April 4, 2009 at Radio City Music Hall, New York City. a. with Paul McCartney , Ringo Starr , Donovan , Ben Harper , Sheryl Crow , Eddie Vedder and Moby . With the concert proceeds, the foundation wants to give socially disadvantaged children the opportunity to learn Transcendental Meditation .
