The Krzemień (dt. Flint) in Bieszczady |
The Bieszczady National Park ([ bʲɛʃˈʧadɨ ]; Polish Bieszczadzki Park Narodowy ) was established in 1973 in the south of the Forest Carpathians . The National Park covers an area of over 29,000 hectares of the largest Polish Mountain National Park. In the partially deserted region, many rare animals have their refuge. Wolves , brown bears , Eurasian lynxes , European wild cats , red deer and wild boar live there , but also the bison , which was released in 1963 . A total of 58 mammal species and 144 bird species have been recorded, including eagle owl , Ural owl , white-backed woodpecker , black stork , corncrake and lesser spotted eagle .
Signposted hiking trails with a total length of 206 km lead through the park. Accommodation can also be found on the edge of the national park. The administration of the national park is located in Ustrzyki Górne , 650 meters above sea level , and some hiking trails converge there.
The Bieszczady National Park stretches from the 930-meter-high Wierch Lacynowy and the 1222-meter-high Smerek above the village of Smerek in the northwest over the Połonina Wetlińska and Połonina Caryńska ridges in a south-easterly direction to beyond Wołosate to the Slovakian and Ukrainian border. It is part of the UNESCO Eastern Carpathian Biosphere Reserve created in 1992 .
