Biraj Bahu ( Hindi : बिरज बहू , biraj bahū ) is an Indian film adaptation by Bimal Roy from 1954. The Hindi film was based on the story Biraj Bou by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay .

action

Nilambar Chakravorty belongs to a poor family. His married brother Pitambar, younger sister Punnu and his wife Biraj live in his household. He is known for his good nature, whereupon Pitambar uses his naivete to share the house and buy a piece of land, but under a false name. Since Nilambhar is unemployed, he and his wife now have to live in miserable conditions.

In addition, Deodhar, a rich young man, has his eye on the beautiful Biraj. He wants to be with her and give her a better life without money worries. He even hires Biraj's maid Sundari to lure her to him.

One day Nilambar goes to a funeral in the nearby town for two days. When he returns home, he is told that Biraj was seen near Deodhar's whereabouts. Nilambar asks her about it, but she refuses to give an explanation. So he asks her to leave the house and Biraj leaves.

Biraj does not return. Rumors emerge that she ran away with Deodhar and is now leading a comfortable life. In reality, however, Biraj was kidnapped that day and carried to Deodhar's boat. After she regains consciousness, she immediately jumps out of the boat. When she wakes up again, she is in a hospital.

She escapes from the hospital and makes the long way home. Due to the bad weather conditions, their already unstable state of health worsens. Nevertheless, she finally reached the doorstep of her house. But she collapses while still in Nilambar's arms, whereupon they call a doctor. Unfortunately he can no longer help Biraj and she dies that same night.
