Birgit Kley (* 29. September 1956 in Essen ) is a German chanson - singer and songwriter .

Life

Birgit Kley received singing lessons at the Conservatory of the Folkwang School in Essen when she was fifteen . She was fascinated by literature and language from an early age, and so her first poetry texts were soon written. Later, their singing, their love of poetry and their desire for elegant presentation found a common mode of expression: the chanson.

Birgit Kley has been involved in Protestant church conventions since 1983 , designing a. a. Bible studies by Peter Bubmann , Eugen Drewermann , Ulrich Schaffer and Heinz Zahrnt musically and designed elaborate productions and major events. She worked with Hans-Jürgen Hufeisen on various projects . For example, in 1986 she was commissioned to write the libretto for the oratorio Die Erde (composers: Richard Geppert , Tobias Seyb , Klaus-Dieter Kienzle ). For the 27th German Evangelical Church Congress in 1997, she and Helmut Krüger designed and staged a thematic stage collage entitled Do you love something special? with music, dance and cabaret elements. At the performance in the anatomy in Leipzig she played five different female characters, for which she also wrote the monologues. At the 28th German Evangelical Church Congress in 1999, she performed her chanson program in the Liederhalle in Stuttgart . Birgit Kley developed the poetic-musical dialogue Die Himmelsleiter with Joachim Knitter. The Ladder to Heaven was premiered at the 29th German Evangelical Church Congress 2001 in the Palais im Zoo in Frankfurt am Main .

The Swiss pianist Jonathan Schaffner has been Kley's musical accompanist and arranger since 1987 . For the two productions Purpurrot and Die Himmelsleiter , Schaffner has put together an ensemble of European musicians: Jonathan Schaffner (piano and arrangements), Michele Croce (clarinet, saxophone and flute), Curdin Janett (accordion) and Maurizio Grillo (drums and percussion ).

With her own chansons and a repertoire of songs in different languages, Birgit Kley has appeared in concerts since 1980. Her lyric texts have appeared in various volumes of poetry. Her singing and her chansons with their own texts can be heard on six CD productions. In addition, Birgit Kley gives workshops in the field of breathing, style and song training and organizes advanced training events on self-awareness and presentation techniques.
