Birgit Meyer (* 1960 in Cologne ) is a German dramaturge and since the beginning of the 2012/2013 season on September 1, 2012 Artistic Director of the Cologne Opera, succeeding Uwe Eric Laufenberg . Meyer is also a doctor of medicine.

Life

Meyer spent her school days in Cologne-Porz and graduated from high school in 1979 at the city high school there. Meyer and Laufenberg played theater together during their school days at the grammar school in Porz: he was Professor Higgins, she was Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady . After graduating from high school, Meyer studied human medicine in Regensburg . She continued her studies after completing the Physikum at the University of Munich . Until her doctorate , Meyer worked, among other things, as a doctor at the Mission Medical Clinic in Würzburg, until at the beginning of 1988 she took up a permanent position at the Klinikum rechts der Isar of the Technical University of Munich . Meyer ended her medical career in 1990 with a doctorate in medicine (Dr. med). In parallel to her doctorate, Meyer began studying theater studies with a focus on music theater after completing her medical degree in October 1986 in Munich.

Meyer worked at various theaters in various fields, including as assistant director at the Stadttheater Würzburg , and did a dramaturgy internship at the Münchner Kammerspiele . In 1992 Meyer was hired as a dramaturge at the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck . There she worked until 1999, most recently as head dramaturge of the music theater.

From September 1999 Meyer was chief dramaturge and member of the management at the Volksoper Vienna (from 1999 to 2003 under director Dominique Mentha , from 2003 to 2007 under director Rudolf Berger and from 2007 to 2009 under director Robert Meyer ). From 1999 to 2004 Meyer designed and directed various production-related exhibitions and events in the Austrian Theater Museum . Under the management of Uwe Eric Laufenberg from the 2009/2010 season until his dismissal on June 21, 2012, Meyer was deputy director and opera director of the Cologne Opera.

At the Salzburg Festival , Meyer worked on the obertitles in various productions. Meyer also worked in various cultural institutions, including the RadioKulturhaus Wien, the Italian Cultural Institute and the Society of Friends of Music Theater. In October 2004 Meyer conceived and directed the international symposium at the Vienna Volksoper “ Degenerate Music . Rediscovered ”.

Since 2008 Meyer has been working on a biography of the German composer, pianist and music teacher Walter Braunfels (1882–1954). Meyer received several teaching assignments, for the first time in the summer semester of 2004 at the Bavarian Theater Academy in Munich in the dramaturgy course, and offered seminars on the subjects of program design, program design and work analysis of opera over a period of four years. Meyer works together with the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna , Department of Music Education (since January 2006) and the Institute for Musicology at the University of Vienna.

After Uwe Eric Laufenberg's dismissal on June 21, 2012, she was appointed opera director on August 6, 2012 by the City of Cologne's main committee for three interim seasons until 2014/2015 at the suggestion of Georg Quander, the Cologne head of culture . In addition, she exercises the function of a manager. In December 2013, with the approval of the city council, on January 13, 2014, her contract was extended for a further two years until August 30, 2017. In February 2016, her contract was extended to August 31, 2020, coupled with two full seasons in the renovated house on Offenbachplatz. If this cannot be realized, the contract is automatically extended to August 31 of the year in which the second full season was realized in the renovated house, but no longer than August 31, 2022.

Meyer has two grown daughters.
