The Diocese of Belize City-Belmopan ( lat . : Dioecesis Belizepolitana-Belmopana ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in Belize City in Belize .
history
Pope Leo XIII. founded the Apostolic Prefecture of British Honduras on June 10, 1888 from cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate of Jamaica and subordinated it to the Archdiocese of Port of Spain as a suffragan . This was raised on January 3, 1893 to the Apostolic Vicariate of British Honduras and on February 29, 1956 to the Diocese of Belize.
On June 1, 1973, the name was changed from British Honduras to Belize . On December 31, 1983, the diocese took its current name after Belmopan was declared the state capital.
The diocese newspaper Christian Herald has been published monthly since September 1979 . In the 1980s and 1990s, when the number of missionaries sent to Belize by the Missouri Province of Jesuits decreased, lay people began to take on more and more responsibility in the congregations, be it as "Mayordomos" (responsible for churches and chapels) be it as "Parish Lay Assistants" (PLA, lay workers of the parish) who are supervised with pastoral tasks.
