Osmond Peter Martin

Osmond Peter Martin (born December 4, 1930 in Dangriga ; † February 16, 2017 ibid) was a Belizean clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Belize City-Belmopan .

Life

Osmond Peter Martin came from a Garifuna family. He attended the Sacred Heart School in his hometown, then the Jesuit- run St. John's College in Belize City . From 1953 to 1959 he studied philosophy and theology in Shrewsbury ( Missouri ) at Cardinal Glennon College and at Kenrick Seminary (doctorate in theol. ). On April 3, 1959, he was ordained a priest for the then diocese of Belize. He was chaplain in Corozal , then pastor San Ignacio and in Belize City.

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Belize and titular bishop of Thucca in Mauretania on June 8, 1982 . The Bishop of Belize, Robert Louis Hodapp SJ , donated him episcopal ordination on October 7th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Gordon Anthony Pantin CSSp , Archbishop of Port of Spain , and Samuel Emmanuel Carter SJ, Archbishop of Kingston, Jamaica .

On November 11, 1983, he was appointed Bishop of Belize by Pope John Paul II. On November 18, 2006, his successor, Pope Benedict XVI. , his age-related retirement.

Awards

In 2007 he was awarded the National Order of Merit, The Order of Belize .
