The Bistum Butare ( lat. : Dioecesis Butarensis ) is in Rwanda preferred Roman Catholic diocese based in Butare .
history
Pope John XXIII founded the diocese of Astrida with the Apostolic Constitution Gaudet sancta on September 11, 1961 from cession of territory by the diocese of Kabgayi . With the Apostolic Constitution Exsultat sancta Mater Ecclesia she was raised to the diocese on August 8, 1962.
It took its current name on November 12, 1963. On March 30, 1992 it lost part of its territory to the Gikongoro diocese .
