The Eparchy Gorakhpur ( Latin Eparchia Gorakhpurensis ) is an eparchy of the Syro-Malabar Church in India, united with the Roman Catholic Church . It is a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Agra . The eparchy is based in the city of Gorakhpur and includes the districts of Gorakhpur , Maharajganj , Deoria , Basti and Siddharthnagar in the northeast of the state of Uttar Pradesh .

history

The eparchy was established on June 19, 1984 by the papal bull Ex quo Divinum Concilium by Pope John Paul II from areas of the diocese of Varanasi . Dominic Kokkat , a member of the Little Flower Congregation , became the first bishop . The members of this congregation have been active in this region since 1970. When Bishop Kokkat resigned from office due to old age, his friar Thomas Thuruthimattam became the new bishop of Gorakhpur.
