The Diocese of Surigao ( Latin : Dioecesis Surigensis ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in Mindanao , Surigao del Norte Province , Philippines . The bishopric is in Surigao City .

The diocese was founded on June 3, 1939 by Pope Pius XII. from the then diocese of Cagayan de Oro and subordinated to the archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro (Philippines) as a suffragan . The first bishop was the Dutch religious, John Vrakking MSC . In 1960 the province was separated; it was not until 1978 that the diocese of Tandag was founded out of the territory, which includes the province of Surigao del Sur .
