Bladensburg is a city in Prince George's County in the US state of Maryland with 7661 inhabitants ( 2000 ). It is located on the Anacostia River , a tributary of the Potomac River .
history
Bladensburg emerged during the colonial period and was a flourishing seaport until deposits in the Anacostia River restricted its navigability. The site gained historical importance in the British-American War through the Battle of Bladensburg on August 24, 1814, in which British troops defeated a numerically superior American militia army and then burned Washington DC to the ground. From 1808 Bladensburg became a frequently used place for duels between congress members . A total of almost 50 duels took place here. Five places in Bladensburg are listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of April 13, 2019), including the George Washington House .
In the 1990s , in cooperation with other historic port cities, extensive efforts were made to renew the city as part of a so-called "Port Towns Revitalization Initiative", which included improving the infrastructure, restoring and reusing historic buildings and removing the old port front City was reconstructed.
