Vegetative characteristics

The Blue Water Speedwell is a perennial , herbaceous plant that usually reaches heights of 10 to 60 centimeters. The stalk , which is indistinctly square in the upper part, grows ascending or is upright, inside rarely pithy and not overflowing with purple.

The lower leaves and sometimes those of the side branches are short-stalked, while the upper ones are partly encompassing half the stem. With a length of up to 12 centimeters and a width of 4 centimeters, the simple leaf blades are oblong-egg-shaped, shallowly serrated to toothed or with entire margins.

Generative characteristics

The flowering time is mainly in the months of June to October. In each case, many flowers are grouped together in numerous, fairly dense, glabrous, more rarely glandularly hairy racemose inflorescences . The flower stalks are bare and about two to three times as long as the calyx.

The hermaphrodite flower has a double flower envelope . The 4 to 7 millimeter large corolla is light blue to pale purple and has reddish veins.

The capsule fruit , which usually sits on the fruit stalks protruding at an acute angle, is roundish oval to almost circular and slightly longer than wide. The durable sepals are longer than the fruit. The fruit usually has a stylus that is more than 1.7 millimeters long .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36 or 18.

In Germany you can find the Blue Water Speedwell almost in the whole area; only in the west and north-west it is missing in some areas. In Austria and Switzerland, the Blue Water Prize is generally scattered.

Veronica anagallis-aquatica grows in reed beds, streams, ditches and springs. The Blue Water Speedwell thrives best on wet or flooded, mostly nutrient-rich, muddy soils . He loves salt and warmth. It occurs in Central Europe in societies of the associations Sparganio-Glycerion fluitantis or Phragmition australis.

ecology

In its submerged form (f. Submersa luck ) the Gauchheil honorary award also occurs in Ranunculetum fluitantis.

Systematics and taxonomy

The first publication of Veronica anagallis-aquatica took place in 1753 by Carl von Linné in his work Species Plantarum , Volume 1, page 12. Linné called her Veronica Anagallis and put a triangle behind it. At Linné, this triangle stands as a symbol for water and the species must therefore be correctly designated according to the code of the ICN nomenclature (Article 23) with the symbol written out and therefore called Veronica anagallis-aquatica . Synonyms for Veronica anagallis-aquatica L. are: Veronica espadamae Pau , Veronica maresii Sennen , Veronica minniana Merino , Veronica reyesana Pau & Merino .
