Bloody Valentine's Day ( My Bloody Valentine ) is a 1981 Canadian horror thriller .
action
Two decades ago in the small town of Valentine Bluffs, five miners were buried in the tunnels in a methane gas explosion. The two colleagues on duty had left their posts to attend the Valentine's Day ball. After six weeks of digging, a man was found alive who had fed on the corpses of the others and gone mad. His name was Harry Warden. He was sent to a mental hospital. Exactly a year later he came back, murdered the two guards who were in default at the time, and packed their hearts in gift boxes with the warning that they would never hold another Valentine's Day party.
Such a festival is being prepared for the first time in 20 years. Two women are murdered by a masked man with a pickaxe, and more people are said to die if the dance takes place. Police chief Newby and the mayor cancel him, but keep the crimes secret to avoid panic. The mine buddies and their friends are secretly holding a party on February 14th on the site of the mine. Some also go down into the mine. More and more of the exuberant young people fall victim to the unknown. The miner TJ tries to save Sarah from the mine. She is his former girlfriend, but is now with the mining buddy Axel because TJ had left the town for a while and was no longer heard from. There are repeated jealous arguments between TJ and Axel about Sarah's favor. In a fight in the mine, the girl rips the mask off the murderer's face: it's Axel. In a flashback, we learn that Axel is the son of one of the guards who were killed and that he had to witness the murder of his father as a toddler under his bed. TJ and Sarah are able to save themselves when cop Newby arrives with his assistants. He was alerted by miners who had fled the party. He had already learned from a phone call from the institution that Warden died five years ago and therefore someone else must be the perpetrator. Axel finally flees, having gone mad, into an old tunnel that partially collapses.
Reviews
- Kino.de wrote: “The Canadian horror shocker emerged shortly after John Carpenter 's ' Halloween ' and belongs to the first wave of slasher films of the 80s. [...] Like similar films (' Mother's Day '), the abundant blood effects of the coercive offender provoked rejection by the criticism of the time and resulted in editing. "
- Cinema described the film as a "classic" of bad taste .
- In the New York Times wrote Tom Buckley : "Bloody Valentine" can probably not tremble with fear, but it is almost certain that they will writhe, first in annoyance and disgust.
