Božidar Ivanović ( Cyrillic : Божидар Ивановић; born August 24, 1949 in Cetinje , Yugoslavia ) is a Montenegrin chess grandmaster , politician and chess official. He was the Montenegrin Minister of Sport in the 1990s. He was able to win the Yugoslav chess championship three times: 1973, 1981, and 1983 (shared). In 1996 he won the championship of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia . His Elo rating is 2406 (as of September 2016), his highest rating of 2550 was in July 1981.

Chess career

Ivanović acquired the title of International Master in 1976. In 1978 he was appointed Chess Grand Master.

He represented Yugoslavia once at the student team world championship, four times at the chess Olympiads , once at the team European championship and once at the team world championship . He then played for Montenegro in 2007 at the European team championship. He achieved the following results:

  • Student team world championship 1972 in Graz , board 3 for Yugoslavia, +10 = 1 −1, board gold medal
  • Chess Olympiad 1982 in Lucerne , first replacement board for Yugoslavia, +0 = 4 −2
  • Team European Championship 1983 in Plovdiv , board 8 for Yugoslavia, +3 = 4 −0, team silver medal
  • Chess Olympiad 1984 in Thessaloniki , first replacement board for Yugoslavia, +2 = 3 −2
  • Team World Championship 1989 in Lucerne, first replacement board for Yugoslavia, +0 = 2 −1, team silver medal.
  • Chess Olympiad 1990 in Novi Sad , third board for the second Yugoslav team, +4 = 4 −1
  • Chess Olympiad 1996 in Yerevan , first board for Yugoslavia, +1 = 8 −2
  • European team championship 2007 in Heraklion , second board for Montenegro, +0 = 2 −1

For the longest part of his career, Ivanović played mainly in Yugoslavia and the Balkans, interrupted by occasional trips to North America and Western Europe. He made his debut in the 1968 final of the Yugoslav championship, but was still struggling that year. In the following year he achieved a balanced result with 9.5 out of 19. In addition to his four championship titles, Ivanović achieved strong results when he finished third to fifth in Zagreb in 1977 with 8.5 out of 13, and in 1991 in Banja Vrućica with 8.5 out of 13 in fourth to seventh place.

  • Shared second to third in tournament "A" from Eksjö 1980 with 7 out of 11
  • Shared first to third in the Lido Open in Venice 1980 with 6 out of 8
  • Fourth in the zone tournament of Budva with 12 out of 19, where he still did not qualify
  • Shared third to fifth in Vinkovci 1982 with 8 out of 13
  • shared fourth to sixth in Vršac 1983 with 8 out of 13
  • Shared first to second at the Canadian Open Championship in Toronto 1983
  • Shared third to eighth at the New York Open 1988 with 6 out of 9
  • Qualification in the zone tournament of Nea Makri 1990 with 9.5 out of 15
  • in the middle of the Interzonal Tournament in Manila 1990 with 6.5 out of 13
  • shared fourth to ninth in Kladovo 1992 with 8 out of 13
  • and second in Nikšić 1994 with 7 out of 11.

Ivanović's imaginative attack against Paul Keres in Sarajevo in 1972 attracted attention . In the position that had emerged from the closed defense of the Spanish game , after 19.… d6 – d5 , White renounced the management 20. exd5 Bxa3 21. dxc6 Bb4 22. Instead, Ivanović sacrificed a knight with 20.Ra3 – g3 d5xc4 , and after 21. Nd4 – f5 Be7 – f6 with 22. Rg3xg7 + an additional rook. After the forced sequence 22.… Bf6xg7 23. Qd1 – g4 Qc7 – e5 24. Bc1 – h6 Qe5 – f6 25. Bh6xg7 Qf6 – g6 Black had to allow the knight fork 26. Nf5 – e7 + Kxg7 27. Ne7xg6 and give up the queen. After 27.… h7xg6 28. e4 – e5 Rf8 – e8 29. Qg4xc4 the position was materially balanced, although Keres was ultimately able to win the game through the more precise game. The game was voted fourth best by Schachinformator 13.

Tasks in later years

He was chairman of the Chess Federation of Montenegro and Minister of State for Sport and Tourism of Montenegro. At the 2007 World Chess Championship he was a member of the Complaints Committee.
