WGS 1 - a Boeing 702 satellite

The Boeing 702 is a satellite bus for communication satellites. On the basis of this design, Boeing Satellite Systems manufactures various payloads for the end customer that are tailored to the respective requirements.

The design of the Boeing 702 is compatible with various launch systems, for example it can be launched with the launchers Delta IV , Atlas V , Ariane 5 , Proton M and Zenit 3 . It was presented in October 1995 and is based on the previous models Boeing 601 and 601HP. In 2009 the improved version 702B was presented.

The satellites were often afflicted with production errors, which is why there were frequent disputes with Boeing and the satellite operators. At the fall Anik F1 went Telesat Canada to court. The affected satellites are: Galaxy 11 , Thuraya 1 , PAS 1R , Anik F1, XM 1 , XM 2 , Intelsat 33e and ViaSat 2 . With Intelsat 29e occurred in April 2019 a fuel leak and consequently the destruction of the satellite.

Technical specifications

The satellite can generate up to 18 kW of power with the help of gallium arsenide solar cell surfaces. It can carry up to 118 high-performance transponders (94 active and 24 in reserve).

The satellites of the type 702MP have a height of 5.8 m to 8.6 m in orbit, a width with antennas of 9.2 m and solar cell surfaces with a span between 36.9 m and 38.1 m. When launched, the satellites are 5.8 m × 3.6 m × 3.1 m. The launch mass is between 5800 kg and 6160 kg, the mass in orbit after the launch between 3582 kg and 3833 kg. The solar cells deliver 13.6 and 18 kW (BOL) and are supported by lithium-ion batteries with 24 to 40 cells and a capacity of up to 236 Ah.

XIPS

As part of the design, Boeing is offering an ion propulsion system called XIPS ( Xenon Ion Propulsion System ). XIPS is about 10 times more effective than liquid fuel systems at maintaining a geostationary satellite orbit . A satellite equipped with this drive only needs around five kg of fuel per year for orbit control . According to Boeing, this is a fraction of what conventional propulsion systems require, and XIPS can also be used to reach the final orbital position, which would result in further fuel and mass savings.

This is realized by the new type 702SP, which also uses an ion thruster as an apogee motor .

By using ion propulsion as an apogee motor, these satellites are said to have only 33% to 50% of the weight of a satellite of the same power with a liquid fuel apogee motor. However, it takes a few months to raise the perigee to reach the GEO .

A typical 702SP satellite should weigh around 1.8 tons at launch and have an electrical output of 3 to 8 kW.
