The Boeing Model 200/221 Monomail is a single-engine aircraft designed for mail and freight transport by the aircraft manufacturer Boeing from the 1930s.

history

The Monomail 200 (a pure mail plane) had its maiden flight on May 6, 1930 in Seattle with test pilot Edmund T. Allen at the controls. Approval took place on May 24, 1930, and in November 1930 the prototype was used as a test vehicle at Boeing Air Transport . The Monomail 221 model took off on its maiden flight on August 18, 1930 and was approved on September 16, 1930. This model was 20 cm longer and had a six-seater passenger cabin with four windows and an entry door on the left side of the fuselage. Both machines were later converted with a passenger cabin for up to eight people. For this purpose, the fuselage was lengthened by 69 cm. These machines were designated as Monomail 221A and flew for United Air Lines on the Cheyenne – Chicago route. Since the propulsion system was not yet fully developed (no controllable pitch propellers ), only these two machines were built and Boeing focused on the next generation of aircraft with two engines. Both machines were lost over time. The first crashed on May 27, 1935 near Glendo , Wyoming , the second on December 31, 1935 near Pueblo , Colorado .

Technical specifications

The monomail was a very advanced aircraft for its time. It was a low- wing aircraft made in half-shell construction with duralumin longitudinal members and additional stiffeners. The cantilevered wing, clad with sheet metal, which contained two fuel tanks and the landing gear bays in the middle section, merged with the fuselage at the base of the wing with an aerodynamically designed cladding. The three-part cargo hold, accessible from above, was located directly behind the engine and had a total volume of 6.16 m³.
