In 1849, German emigrants came as the first settlers to this area and settled on Cibolo Creek. They called the settlement Tusculum. In 1852 they renamed the place Boerne after the German author and publicist Ludwig Börne . In 1856 the first post office was opened and in 1859 the place consisted of 10 houses. When the county was formed in 1862, the citizens of Boerne chose Boerne as the county seat. The courthouse was built in 1870 and is the second oldest still in use today.
The construction of the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway in 1887 gave the town a boost, and by 1890 the population had grown to 800 people.
In 1909 Boerne received city status and in the same year it became the center of the school district. During the Great Depression, cotton cultivation, the city's most important industry, declined significantly, and the population fell within three years from over 2,000 in 1928 to 1,117 in 1931. From the 1960s onwards, Boerne developed increasingly into a residential suburb of San Antonio (Texas) and the population increased from 2,169 in 1960 to 6,178 in 2000 to 10,471 in 2010.
In Boerne there is a long tradition of the German population, so the "Boerne Choral Society" founded in 1860 was only dissolved in 1977. The Boerne Village Band, which still exists today, was also formed in 1860 and the still active “Boerne Schützenverein” in 1864. Since 1967 the "Bergesfest (Berges Fest)" has been celebrated annually in memory of the German tradition.
