Big Spring is the county seat of Howard County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located in west Texas, about 100 km from New Mexico , at the junction of US Highway 87 and Interstate 20, and is about halfway between Dallas and El Paso . It has a total area of 49.7 km 2 , of which 0.2 km 2 is water.
history
The city was named after the source Big Spring in West Texas. When Howard County was founded in 1882, Big Spring was chosen as the county seat, and the first postal office was opened that same year. In 1884 the city already had 1200 inhabitants, six saloons, 4 general stores and a weekly magazine, the Pantagraph . In 1890 there were several private schools and in 1898 the first public school was opened. In 1905 an opera house was opened and in 1914 the city had a hotel, 3 banks and 5 churches of different denominations. In 1926 the first oil was found in the region, which gave the city a new spurt in growth.
