Boso of Merseburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boso († November 1, 970 in Bavaria ) was a Benedictine monk (OSB) and the first bishop of Merseburg .

Nothing is known about Boso's birth, except that he was of Bavarian origin. He was trained in the Regensburg Cathedral Monastery of Sankt Emmeram .

On behalf of Emperor Otto I , Boso evangelized east of the Saale in the Sorbian area . For this he was given ample church income by the ruler. Because he knew the language of his mission area, he was successful in preaching the Christian message.

In a forest near Zeitz , Boso had a stone church built at a place he named after his name ( Buosenrod , mentioned in a document in 976). A Sorbian holy grove was cleared for the construction of the church.

Boso was ordained the first bishop of Merseburg in 968 by Adalbert von Magdeburg . He died in 970 and was buried in the Johanneskirche in Merseburg.

He was beatified on November 1st or December 29th as a memorial day .
