history

The Freiburg Botanical Garden was founded in 1620. He was one of the first in Germany after Leipzig (1580), Jena , Heidelberg and Gießen . The Botanical Garden at that time was laid out by the medical faculty as a teaching garden and was destroyed in the Thirty Years War . It was then re-established, but in 1677 after the annexation of the city by France , it had to give way to the fortifications planned by Vauban .

The second botanical garden was established in 1766 south of the Dreisam in the area of today's Freiau and had an area of 2.7 hectares. It was in turn a facility of the medical faculty of the university. It was severely affected several times by floods caused by the Dreisam floods and the effects of the coalition wars . The garden existed until 1878, the first greenhouses were set up in 1827/1828. In 1829 the population had grown to around 3,000 plant species.

The directors belonged partly to the philosophical, partly to the medical faculty. In addition to Karl Julius Perleb and Fridolin Karl Leopold Spenner , famous botanists were among the directors, such as Alexander Braun , Carl Wilhelm von Nägeli , Anton de Bary and Julius Sachs .

After the garden on the Dreisam had to be given up, a new garden was laid out in 1879 in the Neuburg district in the area of what is now the university's institute quarter. From 1907 Friedrich Oltmanns was director of this garden, which existed until the First World War . Numerous exotic trees can still be found on Albertstrasse today.

After a new institute building was built from 1912 under the Ordinariate of Oltmanns, this garden was also given up and moved to its current location in Herdern . In 1915 the greenhouses were completed, in 1920 the outdoor facilities. In 1932 Friedrich Oehlkers became director of the garden. In 1944 the garden was badly affected by air raids. From 1960 to 1965, Hans Mohr headed the Botanical Garden, followed by Dieter Vogellehner (1969–2002) and Thomas Speck (since 2002).

In 2019, the installation of a computer-controlled drip hose system began, which saves 30% water. If possible, it is to be expanded to 10,000 square meters, which would cost 150,000 euros.
