The Barbeau Monastery (Notre-Dame de Barbeau; Barbelum; Sequanae portus; Sacer portus) was a Cistercian abbey in the commune of Fontaine-le-Port in the Seine-et-Marne department , Île-de-France region , in France . It was about ten kilometers northeast of Fontainebleau and eight kilometers southeast of Melun .

history

The monastery was founded in 1147 by King Louis VII of France on the banks of the Seine (hence the original name Seine-Port) and moved to its later location in 1156. The name is said to be derived from a type of fish ( barbel ; Barbus barbus ) that was fished from the Seine and in which a gemstone is said to have been found, with the proceeds of which the monastery was said to have been built. In 1180 Louis VII was buried in the monastery, but his remains were transferred to Saint-Denis in 1817 . The abbey flourished until the Hundred Years War . Around 1420 the monks were expelled to Melun for 40 years. After 1460 the abbey was restored and enlarged. The abbey suffered damage again in the wars of religion . Under the Commendatar Abbot Cardinal Wilhelm Egon von Fürstenberg the church was renewed again. The abbey was dissolved in the French Revolution and set on fire by the sans-culottes in 1793 . It was bought back by the state in 1810 to set up an orphanage . After another sale to a private person, the demolition took place in 1837 . A castle was built on the site. There is now an equestrian facility on the former monastery grounds .

Buildings and plant

A former ice cellar has been preserved . The church of Fontaine-le-Port has some wooden sculptures (16th century) from the abbey church. A chapel preserved in this community is said to go back to the monastery. The church Sainte-Geneviève of Héricy has an altar from the 18th century from the monastery.
