Herdern is a district of Freiburg im Breisgau to the northeast of the city center . In the south it borders on the Neuburg district , in the west it is bounded by the tracks of the Rhine Valley Railway and meets the districts of Stühlinger and Brühl there , in the north lies the district Zähringen and in the east lies the western slopes of the Roßkopf .

history

The originally independent village, like today's Freiburg districts Wiehre , Zähringen and the independent municipality of Gundelfingen, was first mentioned in a deed of wild animals in 1008. This makes it one of the earliest populated areas in today's urban area. The village was first owned by the dukes of Zähringen , then their heirs, the counts of Freiburg and finally the Fürstenberg family . Until the 15th century, the bishops of Strasbourg were overlords. Herdern became part of the city of Freiburg as early as 1457 and shared its further history.

The village lived mainly from viticulture , which is no longer relevant today. Only the patron saint of the parish , St. Urban, the patron saint of the winemakers and vine people, and a small area of vineyards near the center of the village still reminds of this past.

In the 19th century, building activity began around the old village center along the Glasbach. Many buildings were erected in the south of the district during the Art Nouveau period. Villas with spacious plots were built on the slopes. In July 1903 the Friedrich-Gymnasium opened in Herdern, which had been built from 1901 by Josef Durm . In 1907 the Oberrealschule followed, which later became the Kepler Gymnasium . In the meantime, the building has been torn down except for the striking tower and a new school with the same name has been built in Rieselfeld .

The construction activity continued in the 20th century with loose development in the northern part of Herdern. In this area, the first school building for the Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium was built in 1965–1966 according to plans by the architectural office Behnisch & Partner .

Today the district is very popular because of its tranquility, the high proportion of greenery and the natural location, but it is also expensive. This is less true for the western edge of the district, which does not have the typical characteristics of a quiet residential and villa district. Under Mayor Otto Winterer , many sequoias were planted in Herdern at the beginning of the twentieth century , but some of them have since had to be felled.

In December 2010 a partnership between Herdern and the surrounding community of Gottenheim was sealed.

Annually there is an honorary ceremony at the Wintererstraße / Eichhalde memorial in Freiburg im Breisgau. The Herdern Civic Association invited associations from Herdern and Zähringen to the annual death honor on Sunday of the Dead. The commemoration of the dead took place in 2019 on the occasion of the heavy bombing raid on Freiburg 75 years ago.

Infrastructure and traffic

education and parenting

The district is adequately supplied with kindergartens. The primary school in Herderns is the Weiherhofschule, on whose premises there is also a secondary school. Two grammar schools with different orientations - the old and modern language Friedrich grammar school and the mathematical and scientific Droste-Hülshoff grammar school (including modern language and artistic branches) are also located in Herdern. On the eastern edge of the development on a hillside is a facility managed according to anthroposophical aspects, Haus Tobias , which runs a kindergarten, a school (special school G) and a home for children in particular need of support.

Higher education institutions in the district are the " Catholic University of Freiburg - University of Social Sciences, Religious Education, Care and Management" (formerly known as KFH), the Faculty of Biology of the Albert Ludwig University with the Botanical Garden and a branch of the University Hospital with the Dermatology Clinic, the psychiatric and psychosomatic clinic. The Freiburg Clinic School is also located on this site.

In the building of the former railway orphanage (EBW) in the north of the district, which was built in 1928 and whose central building is a listed building, there is now a dormitory of the Freiburg Student Union for 270 students, which also offers two-room apartments suitable for the disabled.

Culture

Soap box race on the Eichhalde in Freiburg

The "FACTORY for handicrafts, culture and ecology", one of the largest and oldest socio-cultural centers in Germany, is located on Habsburgerstrasse . From 1978 onwards, it was set up in the building of a former yarn factory (previously a furniture factory). Around 150 people work here in 25 companies and institutions (including a print shop, bicycle workshop, daycare center and motorcycle club). In 1987 the first Freiburg block-type thermal power station was installed here and in 2001 the entire site and all buildings were made barrier-free . Many Freiburg residents are primarily familiar with the “front building” on the site, a much-visited cabaret with an adjoining restaurant.

Soapbox races have been held annually in Herdern - with interruptions - since 1931 . Since 1999, these have always taken place on the last Sunday in September on the Eichhalde. Herdermer associations help build the vehicles and run the race.

Authorities and similar institutions

To the west of Habsburgerstrasse, in the less upscale area of the district, there is an administrative center where the Freiburg I and II tax offices and other state authorities are located.

The headquarters of the German Caritas Association (DCV) is also located in Herdern , next to the site of the Catholic University. The Ernst-Lange-Haus of the Evangelical Dean's Office in Freiburg is located on Habsburgerstrasse.

traffic

Herdern is integrated into local public transport through the Freiburg-Herdern stop on the Rhine Valley Railway . Regional trains in the direction of Offenburg (north) and Basel (south) stop here . There are also connections on the Elztalbahn . Line 4 of the Freiburg tram also runs on Habsburgerstraße . It is operated by the Freiburger Verkehrs AG and runs from Zähringen via the city center to the fair . The eastern areas in the plain are accessed by bus route 27. In addition to bus route 23, some regional bus routes run through Stefan-Meier-Strasse in the west.

Habsburgerstrasse is also the most important northbound entry and exit road , which means a corresponding traffic load and reduced quality of living. After extensive renovation and track construction work in 2009 and 2010, the tracks of the Stadtbahn have been running on their own track structure since the end of 2010, apart from two bottlenecks.

Others

The Abdurrahman Mosque in Herdern is a center of the Salafist scene in southern Baden.
