Boubou Cissé (born 1974 in Bamako ) is a Malian politician and economist . From April 2019 to August 2020 he was the country's prime minister .

Education and early professional career

Cissé completed his school education in his hometown, the United Arab Emirates and in Germany. After graduating, he studied economics at the University of Auvergne in Clermont-Ferrand , and received his doctorate from the University of Aix-Marseille . From 2005, Cissé worked at the World Bank , initially in Washington, DC , later as its representative in Nigeria and then in Niger .

Change to politics

In 2013, Cisse returned to his home country and took up ministerial posts in the government. Initially he was responsible for the areas of industry and mining , from April 2014 only for the latter. Eventually Cissé became Minister for the Economy and Finance . He also served on the Nelson Mandela Foundation Board of Directors .

On April 22, 2019, Cissé was appointed the country's new Prime Minister by President Boubacar Keïta . He should also take opposition politicians into account when forming his government. Cissé succeeded Soumeylou Boubèye Maïga , who had resigned with his cabinet a few days earlier. He is considered apolitical and a technocrat . On May 6, 2019, he appointed his cabinet, which includes 37 ministers.

Prime Minister Cissé and President Keïta were arrested in a coup initiated by members of the Malian armed forces in August 2020 . Keïta then announced his resignation in the early morning of August 19, 2020, that of the entire government and the dissolution of parliament.
