Life

After attending school, Maïga completed a degree at the Institut polytechnique Rural (IPR) in Katibougou , which he graduated in 1981 with a degree in applied science with a focus on breeding. In the following years he worked as a specialist in integrated rural development, for projects of system evaluation and rural systems, but also for agricultural projects and for questions of natural resources. In 1982, he became head of the branch office of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries in Gao and served from 1990 to 1999 as Vice-Secretary General of the Malian Association of Human Rights AMDH (Association malienne des Droits de l'Homme) . He then worked between 1999 and 2001 as a coordinator for livestock projects in the Mopti region , before he was employed in 2001 as a research scientist in the Ministry of Rural Development and responsible for inter-ministerial planning and statistical programs. He then acted from 2003 to 2008 as head of the environmental studies and environmental protection department of the Agency for the Niger Basin (Agence du Bassin du Fleuve Niger) in Bamako and then as a consultant for national and international organizations.

In 2013, Maïga, who is a member of the Rassemblement pour le Mali (RPM), was the director of Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta's successful election campaign in the 2013 presidential election in Mali . On April 11, 2014, he became Minister for Environment, Water and Sanitation in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Moussa Mara (Ministre de l'Environnement, de l'Eau et de l'Assainissement) . After Tieman Coulibaly's dismissal on September 6, 2016, he took over the post of Minister for Defense and Veterans (Ministre de la Défense et des Anciens combattants) in the cabinet of Prime Minister Modibo Keïta . On April 10, 2017, he finally succeeded Keïta and took over the office of Prime Minister himself. On April 11, 2017, he presented his cabinet, which includes Tiéna Coulibaly as Minister of Defense and Tieman Coulibaly as Minister for Territorial Administration. Abdoulaye Diop remained foreign minister . On December 29, 2017, he resigned with the entire cabinet. The resignation was not justified. However, Maïga had not been able to achieve a reconciliation with the Touareg in northern Mali. The situation in Mali was unstable due to radical Islamist attacks. Former Defense Minister Soumeylou Boubèye Maïga was appointed as his successor, and his cabinet, which was appointed on December 31, 2017, consists of 36 ministers.
