The Boviste ( Bovista ) are a genus of mushrooms from the mushroom relatives family .

The type species is the lead gray bovist ( Bovista plumbea ).

features

These are species with small to medium-sized and above-ground angiocarpic fruiting bodies . They are mostly spherical, sometimes pear-shaped and sometimes detach from the mycelium when they are ripe . The gleba is initially white, later olive to black-brown. A subgleba is missing or is compact. The capillitium is of the Bovista or Lycoperdon type, transitional forms are possible. The Boviste have a two-layer exo peridia , which falls off when ripe or remains in the form of inconspicuous scales or flakes. The paper- or parchment-like endoperidia opens at the vertex when it is ripe.

The species of the genus occur mainly on pastures, in grassland, on dunes or in steppes.
