Bowling Green is a town in County Wood in the American state of Ohio , about 30 km south of downtown Toledo . Bowling Green has a population of nearly 30,000 (as of the 2000 census ) and is the seat of the administration of Wood County . The local Bowling Green State University dominates city life with 20,000 students.

Bowling Green is home to a number of listed buildings and ensembles from the time when Ohio was settled by whites, which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). With the Main Street Historic District and the Boom Town Historic District there are two complete city quarters under monument protection.

history

Bowling Green was founded in 1835 by Joseph Gordon, who named the place after his hometown Bowling Green , Kentucky . The place developed slowly until an oil boom broke out in Northwest Ohio with the discovery of oil wells in 1886. Oil was also pumped around Bowling Green using Derricks , and energy-intensive companies (especially the glass industry ) settled here. However, by the turn of the 20th century, the springs began to dry up again, and Bowling Green's economic activity fell sharply. In 1914 the HJ Heinz Company opened a large manufacturing facility in the city, and the first lectures were held at Bowling Green State University , founded in 1910 .
