Brandon De Wilde

Andre Brandon De Wilde (born April 9, 1942 in New York City , † July 6, 1972 in Denver ) was an American actor .

De Wilde was born into a theater family. His father was a Broadway producer and his mother a stage actress. At the age of nine, Brandon De Wilde made his acting debut in the Broadway play The Girl Frankie . For this, he was the first child to receive the Donaldson Award . In 1952 , Brandon played the same role in the film adaptation of Fred Zinnemann's story . This earned him a Golden Globe Special Award for Best Juvenile Actor .

In 1953, Brandon De Wilde played the Oscar-nominated role of Joey Starrett in My Great Friend Shane . In the following years he made the films The clock has expired (1957) with James Stewart and Audie Murphy , Die Unverstandenen (1959) and The Wildest Among Thousands (1962) with Paul Newman , Melvyn Douglas and Patricia Neal . In 1965, De Wilde starred alongside John Wayne and Kirk Douglas in the war film First Victory .

After this film, Brandon De Wilde played mostly on Broadway again. In 1971 he could be seen in Die Höllenhunde . His last film, Wild in the Sky, was to follow a year later .

On July 6, 1972, he was seriously injured in a traffic accident in Lakewood . De Wilde succumbed to these injuries four hours later at Denver University Hospital.
