Starting from the southern slope of the 849  m high Adlersberg , the stream flows primarily in a southerly direction. In the district of Breitenbach it leaves the wooded area of the Thuringian Forest and the red sandstone foreland and the Vesser flows into it from the left, which brings more water than the Breitenbach itself. About 3 km to the southwest, it finally flows into the Alder in St. Kilian.
